Logo Design Is Just Problem Solving (And I Genuinely Hate Puzzles)

Annabelle

Logo design is actually just problem solving. It’s kind of like working out a puzzle, and I hate puzzles. But for some reason I like creative puzzles like that. There’s something so satisfying about when it clicks, when you find the idea. That idea does often come when you’re literally on a walk, doing something other than design, and then you go and grab your sketchbook because you want to write it down or test it out.

Why I Avoided Branding For Years

At uni, I didn’t actually think I was good at it. I don’t know whether I brought that belief on myself or whether it was a bit of both, but I believed it. I kind of avoided branding projects on the whole, I actually didn’t do them. I did more experiential, environmental and spacial design instead, and connected ideas in that respect.

I used to write in my degree show that I wanted to work in experiential design, at the intersection of health and wellness, which is still true today. But now I do branding projects as well, which is kind of mad when I think back on it.

The Connection I Didn’t See Coming

When I tested myself, put it into practice freelancing across different types of graphic design, I realised I could apply the same connective skills, the design thinking of an experience or an environment, just at a different scale.

Branded entity work is obviously much more than the logo, and it was actually the skills from experiential design that made me a better logo designer.

I hadn’t developed those thinking skills when I first started doing branding. Now I have, and I know how to work my brain in that way.

If you want a brand that’s built on that kind of connective thinking rather than a template, take a look through some of the identities I’ve built.
